Cerita 3 - A Teacher's Prayer

I want to teach
My students more
Than lessons in a book ;

I want to teach them
Deeper things
That people overlook ;

The value of
A rose in bloom
Its use the beauty, too ;

A sense of curiosity
To discover
What is true ;

How to think
And how to choose
The right above the wrong ;

How to live
And learn each day
And grow up to be strong ;

To teach them always how to gain
In wisdom and in grace ;

So they will someday
Make the world
A brighter, better place

Let me be
A friend and guide
To give these minds a start ;

Upon their way
Down life’s long road
Then I’ll have done my part…
Jill Wolf

This poem really inspires me to be a good teacher to my students. Some people think that being an English teacher / lecturer is only about teaching the language. For me, it is more than just teaching the language. Being a lecturer in an Islamic background college really challenge me to teach the language plus the Islamic values. Yes, I'm not an 'ustazah' (although some of my students call me 'ustazah') but I must try to be one! Sounds funny right! As what Jill Wolf said in her poem, "I want to teach my students more than lessons in a book" and that's what I'm trying to do in my teaching. Therefore, thanks to Allah for giving me a chance to be 'someone' , thanks to my students for giving me a chance to be 'someone', and thanks to myself for giving me a chance to be 'someone'....Alhamdulillah....

ME AND MY WONDERFUL STUDENTS
